OBJECTIVES OF THE CONFERENCE

The Annual Conference of the International Association for Mathematical Geology, IAMG'98, will be held in Isola d'Ischia, (Napoli, Italy) October 5-9, 1998. Previous Conferences of the same series have been held in Mount Tremblant (Canada, 1994), Osaka (Japan, 1995), Beijing (China, 1996), and Barcelona (Spain, 1997).

This international conference will focus primarily on the mathematical and statistical analysis of Time-Space Systems in Geology and Environmental Sciences. Other topics relevant to mathematical geology (see below) will also be included.

The conference is sponsored by the International Association for Mathematical Geology (IAMG) and by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (C.N.R., Italy); it will consist of 5 days devoted to technical sessions, tutorial workshops and excursions in areas of scientific and tourist interest. A full program for accompanying guests and a conference banquet are also planned.

ISCHIA

Ischia Island Ischia, the largest island in the Gulf of Naples, hosts six villages with a total of about 45,000 inhabitants. Known as the Green Island, due to the typically lush vegetation that covers it entirely throughout the year, the island is of volcanic origin and is characterised by the presence of a phillipsite and analcime-rich tuff, called green tuff because of the presence of glauconite. Ischia owes its fame and its advanced economic-social development to the richness that lies in its underground. It is full of thermal-radioactive springs, which for centuries have provided health and physical beauty in a setting that is still ecologically intact.

Ischia is also famous for its ideal climate, its pleasant countryside, its crystal-clear sea and for its genuine foods and delicious wine, made from grapes grown in zeolitic soil on the slopes of volcanic Mount Epomeo (787 m). Ischia is an ideal starting point for post-conference vacation trip to Capri, Pozzuoli and Phlegraean Fields, downtown Naples (with its old Greek and Roman structure), Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Sorrento, Amalfi and Paestum.

The island of Ischia constitues, with the Phlegrean Fields and the Somma-Vesuvius, the classical active volcanic area of the Quaternary Potassic Roman Province in central-southern Italy. This volcanism is related to the Plio-Quaternary tectonic evolution of the western margins of the Apennine chain. Ischia delimits the north-western part of the Gulf of Naples, together with the island of Procida and the Capo Miseno Peninsula. The island has an area of 46.4 km2 and is entirely composed of volcanic and epivolcanic rocks. Its morfology is mainly characterised by non-equilibrium features, due both to the very recent volcanic activity and to complex tectonic history. The island was founded by the Greeks in the 8th century B.C. and still bears witness to its past: the necropolis of Lacco Ameno, the Aragonese castle, the old harbour town at Ischia Ponte, the church of Soccorso di Forio.

Conference site map The conference site will be Hotel Continental Terme, a first-class hotel located in a park covering 30,000 m2, with 250 rooms and 5 suites. The hotel is only 100 meters from the sports centre and stadium and behind the famous pine forest of Ischia, and ideal place for long walks. A minibus service links the hotel to the beach where water sports facilities are available.

The conference has been scheduled in a period which is convenient for the low presence of tourists in the island and the favoureable weather conditions (mediterranean climate). The island is full of thermal-radioactive springs that for centuries have provided health and physical beauty in a setting that is still ecologically intact. The hot springs of Ischia are renowned since ancient times. They are already mentioned by Homer in the Iliad and by Virgil in the Aeneid, as also by Pliny and Strabo.

The Hotel Continental Terme is equipped with the most advanced facilities for conferences, seminars and conventions. Other hotels and restaurants are located in the immediate vicinity of conference site.

Connections

Naples mapThe island is connected to the Gulf of Naples by means of ferry-boats and hydrofoils. Capodichino airport of Naples serves both domestic and international (european) flights. Connections by bus and taxi from the airport to the port are available, as well as connections by intercity trains from Milan, Rome and Florence. Connections by bus and taxi allow to achieve the port from the central station of Naples. People that arrive from other countries than Europe, can take an international flight to Rome or Milan and then a domestic flight to Naples, or an intercity train (click on the small map to see the full size version).

TECHNICAL PROGRAM

The IAMG'98 conference will start Sunday, October 4, at 6 p.m. with an official reception followed by three days of plenary and parallel technical sessions. The conference will be divided in several morning and afternoon sessions, opened by keynote lectures given by invited speakers. Tentatively, selected topics of the conference are:
  1. time-space systems in the earth sciences;
  2. compositional data analysis;
  3. geostatistics;
  4. numerical modelling and simulation;
  5. multivariate analysis;
  6. prediction and prevention of geological hazard;
  7. mathematical advancements in geophysics;
  8. engineering geology;
  9. image analysis;
  10. numerical volcanology;
  11. advanced topics in mathematical geology;
  12. multidisciplinary data integration.

The last two days of the conference will be devoted to three one day tutorial workshops and to geological excursions.
The argument of the tutorial workshops will be:
  1. Stochastic space/time analysis and estimation (by G. Christakos);
  2. Fundamentals of geostatistics (by V. Pawlowsky-Glahn);
  3. New methods and concepts in mathematical geology (by F. Agterberg).

IAMG'98 FINAL PROGRAM

CALL FOR PAPERS

Submitted contributions will be accepted for oral, poster or software presentation after revision by at least two referees. The Organising Committee considers the posters and software presentations as important as oral presentations, and no difference will be made in the publication of both types of contribution in the proceedings volume (see below). Poster exhibitors will attend their posters for one hour to discuss their findings in detail with interested parties. We expect that this format will allow the maximum interaction between participants at the conference.

Interested contributors should submit a one-page abstract of 200 to 400 words in English without figures or references before 31 January 1998. Notification of acceptance together with the instructions for the camera-ready manuscript (maximum 6 pages) will be mailed on 31 March 1998. The final camera ready copy will be due before 30 May 1998. Participants at the conference will receive a volume of extended abstracts.
