1              The chemistry in the Antarctic Ozone Hole removes about 150 Dobson Units of ozone over an area greater than the Antarctic continent, about 20 million square kilometers each August – October.  Often, people have suggested that we just generate ozone on the ground, pack it into airplanes, and fly them into the lower Antarctic stratosphere and release it.  Do some calculations to show the feasibility of this plan.  On the way, you will want to consider:

a             the total amount of ozone that needs to be replaced;

b             the mass of that ozone;

c             the volume of that ozone, as a gas and as a liquid.

 

 

2              Nitric acid produced in urban smog is often removed from the atmosphere by dry deposition.  What is the typical residence time of HNO3?
