Schools

We have been making many visits to the schools with our mother who is teaching GIS to some students and teachers.

There are 4 schools here. Montserrat Secondary School with ages 11-17.There are 3 primary schools with kindergarten through 10/11 years of age. These schools are Lookout, Brades and St. Augustines.

On Dec.5 and 6 we visited some schools to start installing ArcVoyager software on school computers. We installed the software while our mum talked to the teachers and worked out a schedule for working in the classroom.

On Monday, December 9 we helped our mum teach the 4th grade class at Lookout. The children were very excited and really wanted to learn. They were all very cute and very fun. We worked with them in groups of 4-5 students to show them how to explore world geography datasets and how to find countries on the world map. Also, we looked at volanoes around the world and the location of the Soufriere Hills volcano here in Montserrat.

On Tuesday, December 10 we installed the software on 15 school PC's at the Montserrat Secondary School. Our mum taught two teachers some basic information and the teachers will work with their students in January. Our mum will send them some new lesson sets based on Caribbean and Montserrat geography for the secondary students to use.

Also, on Tuesday we helped 6th graders at St. Augustine's learn some basic things in ArcVoyager GIS software. They were very enthusiastic.

Wed Dec 12
Today we went to Brades Primary School to install software on the PC's while mum gave two teachers a workshop on the software. One teacher works part time for the local TV station and called a reporter to do s story on what we're doing. He interviewed us on videotape for the local news and a 15 minute show. We watched ourselves on TV that night. It was fun! He said he would give us a copy of the tape to take home.
The 6th grade teacher would like to set up penpals with Cooper's 6th grade class so when we get home we'll talk to Mr. Fitzgerald and see if anyone wants to e-mail them.
We went back to St. Augustine's to teach the 6th graders again.

Thurs Dec 12
Tonight we went to the school for the Christmas concert for all the kids from all the schools. It was lots of fun. There were small plays, dances, songs and music. All the costumes were very colorful.

Fri Dec 13
School is out now for Christmas break. All the kids go back to school on Jan. 6. Our mum will send them some Montserrat lesson sets to use beginning at the end of January. We would like to come back to Montserrat to help them in the schools with GIS lessons again.
